MADISON — On Sunday, October 20, 2013, at 5:25 p.m., officers with the Janesville Police Department responded to a trail area roughly one mile north of Kennedy Road and Highway 14 to investigate a report of a body found in the area.  At the request of the Janesville Police Department, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), and the Rock County Coroner’s Office were dispatched to assist in the investigation.

Initial findings from an autopsy conducted this morning by the Dane County Medical Examiner show the deceased individual, identified as 43-year-old John Conger, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Conger, a Lieutenant and Public Information Officer with the Milton Police Department, has been employed with the department since May 1, 1992.

Milton Police Chief Dan Layber issued the following statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lt. Conger’s family and loved ones.  John is going to be dearly missed by all of us at the Milton Police Department.  He was a dedicated officer who was committed to the Milton community, spearheading many of the police department’s outreach and educational activities.  His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him.”

This matter is being investigated jointly by the Janesville Police Department and Division of Criminal Investigation at the Wisconsin Department of Justice with assistance from the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.
