MADISON — The Vernon County Sheriff's Department is working with the Department of Justice (DOJ), Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Cold Case Unit to identify and solve the murder of “Jane Doe,” who was found deceased in rural Vernon County May 4, 1984. A news conference about the case is scheduled for tomorrow.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also is assisting Wisconsin investigators with this case. Media from outside of Wisconsin are encouraged to attend the news conference. Details are below.

Under the direction of Vernon County Sheriff John Spears, retired Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Hanson -- who was the first patrol deputy on the scene in 1984 – continues to actively work the cold case for Vernon County. Sheriff Spears, Hanson, DCI Deputy Administrator Dave Matthews, and other investigators throughout the past 28 years are among those who will be in attendance for the news conference.
