NewPage Wisconsin System, Inc. Agrees to Pay $28,000 Fine for Violating State Air Pollution Control Laws

MADISON The Wisconsin Department of Justice has settled a lawsuit against NewPage Wisconsin System, Inc., for violations of state air pollution control laws at its Wood County pulp and paper mill in 2006.

According to the complaint, filed at the request of the Department of Natural Resources, NewPage Wisconsin System, Inc., exceeded the emissions limit in its air pollution control permit for 28 days.  This permit controls the specific air pollutants that have harmful effects on human health and the environment.  NewPage Wisconsin System, Inc., cooperated with the DNR, implemented corrective measures, and additional tests demonstrated compliance with the permit standard. 

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, NewPage Wisconsin System, Inc., has agreed to pay penalties and assessments totaling $28,000 for the violations. 

"The state's permitting process is designed to protect Wisconsin's environment while enabling individuals to conduct lawful enterprises," said Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.  "We will continue to work with the DNR to make sure that Wisconsin's environmental laws are followed." 

Assistant Attorney General Mary Batt prosecuted the case.  The settlement was approved by Wood County Circuit Court Judge James Mason.
