MADISON - Mindi K. Larson, age 33, formerly a legal secretary, has been charged in Pierce County Circuit Court with embezzlement, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced today. If convicted of all charges, Larson faces a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $25,000.
The criminal complaint alleges that in 2002, 2003, and during the first eight months of 2004, Larson embezzled $95,715 from her employer, the Brandt Law Office of Prescott, Wisconsin. She embezzled the money by writing herself payroll checks in excess of the amount she was entitled to and by paying her creditors with checks written on the law office accounts.
The allegations in the complaint and described above have not yet been proven in a court of law. The defendant is presumed innocent, and the state bears the burden of proving the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The court has scheduled an initial appearance for Larson in Pierce County Circuit Court on October 8, 2007.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Gabrysiak as special prosecutor for Pierce County. The case was investigated by the Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation.
