Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957)

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born near Pepin, Wisconsin, in February of 1867. Her family moved from place to place a lot when she was a little girl. In addition to Wisconsin, she also lived in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota. Because her family moved a lot, Laura's education was different than most children. She went to one-room schoolhouses, where kids of different ages shared one room and one teacher. Her first school was called Barry Corner School in Pepin. Laura started when she was only four years old. She only went to school there for a little while because her family moved again. Laura Ingalls became a teacher. She married a man named Almanzo Wilder in 1885, and they moved to Missouri where they lived for the rest of their lives. Their daughter, Rose, liked to listen to her mother tell stories about when she was little. Rose told her mom that she should write down her stories and make them into books. Laura did this, and her first book was published in 1932. The name of it was Little House in the Big Woods. This book is about the Wisconsin cabin where she was born.
