American Water Spaniel, the State Dog

The American Water Spaniel was first registered with the United Kennel Club by Dr. F.J. Pfeifer, who lived near New London, Wisconsin, on February 8, 1920. It is believed to be one of only five dog breeds that originated in the United States. It is the only one native to Wisconsin. It was developed to help waterfowl hunters in the Wolf and Fox River Valley region of the state. They needed a dog with a thick warm coat that could also fit easily into a small boat. An American Water Spaniel is a sturdy little dog with a good nose, a fondness for water, eager to please and easily trained. They are affectionate and make a good watchdog and family pet. It was adopted as Wisconsin's official state dog in 1985.
