Medicaid Fraud Control Unit

The Wisconsin Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) investigates and prosecutes crimes committed against vulnerable adults in nursing homes and other facilities, as well as fraud perpetrated by providers against the Wisconsin Medicaid program.  The MFCU, in conjunction with local law enforcement officials, investigates and prosecutes allegations of:

  • Medicaid provider fraud;
  • Abuse of, neglect of and misappropriation from residents or patients residing in facilities that receive Medicaid funds;
  • Abuse and neglect of residents in board and care facilities that do not receive Medicaid funding, such as nursing homes, CBRFs, and adult family homes;
  • Criminal laws affecting the Medicaid program, including but not limited to laws relating to fraud and the health, safety and welfare of Medicaid recipients.

See Wis. Stats. §§ 49.49 and 49.495 and 42 U.S.C. § 1396(b)(q)(4).

MFCU works cooperatively with other state regulatory agencies, including the Department of Health Services, the Department of Regulation and Licensing, and the Department of Revenue, in investigating and prosecuting its cases.  MFCU also works cooperatively with district attorneys’ office and law enforcement agencies around the state.

Medicaid provider fraud may be reported to the MFCU at 1-800-488-3780
