Crime Laboratory Bureau Interim Director
Jana Champion was appointed as the Interim Crime Laboratory Bureau Director for the Wisconsin Department of Justice in January 2015. Jana is responsible for the management of Wisconsin's three crime laboratories.
Most recently serving as Crime Laboratory Deputy Director since 2012, Jana has been with the Department of Justice for 28 years and has been in forensics for 30 years. She started her career with the Drug Enforcement Administration in Chicago, IL. She then came to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory system as a Controlled Substance analyst, later transferring to the Toxicology unit. In 1996 Jana was appointed the Chemistry Supervisor for the Controlled Substances, Toxicology and Trace Identification units. In 2006, Jana became the Laboratory manager of the State Crime Laboratory in Milwaukee.
Jana holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Mount Mary College. She is a Certified Public Manager and a Certified Grant Manager.
Jana has been active in the field of forensics, hosting several national forensic meetings. She is a past president of the Association of Forensic Quality Assurance Managers. She is an ISO assessor with the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board and a member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors, the Wisconsin Certified Public Managers, the Association of Forensic Quality Assurance Managers, and the National Association of Professional Women.
