Criminal Records Unit
The Criminal History Records Unit maintains the criminal history repository for the state of Wisconsin which consists of over 1.3 million records. The unit is responsible for processing arrest, charging decisions and disposition information submitted to the Crime Information Bureau (CIB) from law enforcement agencies, district attorneys, clerks of court and municipal court offices throughout the State. The unit processes expungement requests and sends record updates to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Check the CIB FAQ for additional information about background checks and associated fees. More information regarding background checks, including links to obtain a background check, may be found on the Background Check & Criminal History Information page.
The Criminal History Records Unit is staffed by 10 full-time employees. The employees in the unit interact daily with law enforcement agencies, district attorneys, clerks of court and municipal court offices throughout the State in their effort to maintain the most accurate and up-to-date criminal history records in the criminal history repository. They also send record updates to the FBI. Unit members process expungement requests received by CIB and answer telephone calls from the general public.
